Fatigued driving can lead to catastrophic crashes

Drivers should always ensure that they are in the proper mental condition to operate their vehicle safely. This means that they should be well-rested before they get behind the wheel. Driving while fatigued puts drivers and others on the roadways at risk of being involved in a crash.

There are several reasons why it’s never a good idea to drive while fatigued. They all center around a change in the ability to maintain control of the vehicle and to react to situations that occur when they’re driving. There is also the chance of dozing off while they’re driving, which is a significant risk.

Why is fatigued driving dangerous?

Fatigue is dangerous because it can have a negative impact on the skills a person needs to drive. This includes a reduction in the person’s cognitive ability and a change in motor function. The effects of fatigue increase as time goes on. By the time a person goes 20 hours without sleep, they will experience the same effects as a person who is legally impaired with a blood alcohol concentration of .08%.

Some drivers believe they can overcome fatigue by doing things like rolling down the windows or having caffeine, but no options will help the effects of fatigue except getting sleep. This means fatigued drivers should get off the road as soon as possible and get ample rest before continuing on their journey.

Unfortunately, even drivers who are well rested may be struck by drivers who aren’t. Victims of fatigued driving crashes may opt to pursue a compensation claim to help address the financial damages of the crash. Working with someone familiar with these matters may be beneficial.
